Appetizers for Malaysia Chinese New Year Potluck

Malaysian Chinese New Year potlucks often feature a mix of traditional Chinese dishes along with Malaysian favorites. Here are some appetizer options that would be great for such an occasion:

1. Yee Sang (Prosperity Toss Salad): A colorful salad made with shredded vegetables, pickled ginger, pomelo, crispy wonton strips, and various sauces. It's traditionally tossed high in the air with chopsticks while saying auspicious phrases. ( can be found in restaurants or supermarkets). Restaurants usually will include sashimi (raw fish slices).

  1. 2. Spring Rolls (Popiah): Fresh spring rolls filled with a mixture of jicama, carrots, lettuce, tofu, and sometimes shrimp or pork, wrapped in thin rice paper and served with a sweet chili sauce (Thai chili sauce). For a twist, you can deep-fried the popiah. Personally, I prefer Vietnamese spring roll. They are wrapped with long, fresh chives and soo hoon.

  2. 3. Prawn Fritters (Cucur Udang): Deep-fried batter containing prawns, onions, and vegetables, served with a spicy dipping sauce.

  3. 4. Satay: Skewered and grilled marinated meat (commonly chicken, beef, or lamb) served with a peanut sauce, cucumber slices, and leaf-wrapped rice (ketupat).

  4. 5. Sesame Balls (Jian Dui): Deep-fried glutinous rice balls coated in sesame seeds and filled with sweet bean paste or lotus seed paste. ( can be found frozen in supermarkets or street-side foodstalls )

  1. 6. Curry Puffs: Flaky pastry filled with a savory mixture of curried potatoes, chicken, and sometimes peas or carrots. (can be found frozen in supermarkets and street-side foodstalls )

  2. 7. Fried Wantons (Wontons): Crispy fried dumplings filled with minced meat (usually pork) and served with a sweet chili sauce or sweet and sour sauce. (can be found frozen in supermarkets )

  3. 8. Nyonya Kuih: Assorted bite-sized traditional Malaysian sweets such as kuih lapis (layer cake), kuih talam (pandan and coconut cake), or kuih seri muka (pandan and glutinous rice cake).

  4. 9. Steamed Dumplings (Siu Mai): Open-faced dumplings filled with minced pork, shrimp, and mushrooms, steamed and served with soy sauce. (can be found frozen in supermarkets )

  5. 10. Sambal Fish Balls: Fish balls cooked in a spicy and aromatic sambal sauce made from chili peppers, shrimp paste, garlic, ginger, and other spices.
