Does My Child Really Has Learning Disbility ?!?!

As we are cautiously dipping our toes back into society, I noticed that Covid-19 has left a big and unsightly scar on our children's education.

Online learning was immediately enforced during this critical period and study schedules were altered which caused confusion-not only among educators, parents as well as our vulnerable children. This sudden dramatic change has greatly affected children not only socially but mentally as well.

Educators were required to teach online. To be fair, were they equipped with the required tools, materials and training? Are there even internet connection in rural areas?

As for parents, do they have the gadgets at home that supports the online classes? What happens to big families with many children? How to purchase more gadgets during this uncertainty time? Parents were required to juggle between their work at home and guide their children while attending online classes.

During this critical learning period, many children started to show symptoms of reading or writing difficulties, autistic, dyslexia which hinders children's ability to learn. Learning has turn into such a chore and to some, even nightmare!

What started to be a fun learning journey at the age of 3; interacting with teachers and peers, hand-eye coordination with the correct pen holding method and reading all were disrupted as we were not allowed to interact with others and not even to go to school.

This has greatly impacted the LOWER PRIMARY levels ( P1, P2 & P3 ). The previous lockdown period has refrained these group of children to physically learn in school. Some of these children could not even handle a pencil properly ( physical learning enables educators to observe, guide and correct the posture immediately ). Whereas some other children has reading difficulty as they are not used to handling and reading books and the biggest challenge is to read aloud in front of their social-distancing peers ( looking weird with mask and some even face shield ) and their towering teachers.

As parents, we really need to put ourselves in their shoes, show more empathy, pause and observe the ever-challenging and changing environment that our children are facing.

How courageous are our children to endure everything silently despite all the confusion? Ironically and sadly, we tend to negatively make ignorant statements that our children are not that clever, are slow in learning and to make things worse : has learning disabilities.

Is it true that my child has learning disability?

On my journey to assist children in their studies, I was quite surprised when quite a number of parents actually informed me that their children has learning disability before I mention anything...and to make things worst, right in front of their children.

Brushing that thought aside, I coached their children using my programme without any prejudice...to my amazement, all these children are perfectly clever and able to learn swiftly. It is just the teaching method and realistically, perhaps the amount of children in class which the teacher is unable to guide individually. To these teachers, I can truly understand your predicament as I have been a tutor and special needs children's assistant. However, please refrain from categorizing children into learning disabilities, especially in front of them. This will greatly impact them negatively

As parents, it is our responsibility to assist our children in their journey, especially the foundation in their education. It can be really challenging, especially for working parents. A thought of the day, "Those little feet won't be little forever."

As a working mum myself, I found the perfect solution by integrating quality time and building a stronger foundation in my children's education with only 15 minutes a day (of course, remove the negative statements and scolding) through a proven effective online education programme which has acquired 12 awards within 5 years of establishment.
